Nearly twenty years ago, I attended an Answers in Genesis conference in my hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and I heard evidence for the Christian faith that I had never heard anywhere else: not at church, not in my Bible studies, not from my Christian friends. I hadn’t even realized the little doubts and questions I had and how they were imperceptibly undermining my faith. But when the speakers at that conference addressed those doubts and questions—using a biblical lens—it was the beginning of a major overhaul of my understanding of Scripture and the absolute authority of God’s Word. The answers were in Genesis . . . in the Bible! The foundation of my faith moved from the shifting sand of man’s word to the firm rock of God’s Word. And my life has never been quite the same.

 

In this series of blog posts, I would like to share some of my journey with you—from Pharisee to follower. We’ll retrace the meandering trail that took me from following the rules to following Jesus. And he has led me on quite an adventure! I would end up taking the gospel—along with this newfound evidence—into the county jail, the behavioral health center, the juvenile detention center, and the halfway house, and I would come to see how brightly the light shines in the darkness. I saw how evidence cleared intellectual obstacles, which led to genuine belief, an irrepressible desire to share the good news, and, ultimately, the discovery of how love trumps legalism. Truth in love transforms everyone—the tax collector and the Pharisee!

From the murmurings in my conscience to radical steps of obedience, these stories share the many ways that God has gone about transforming me by the renewing of my mind.  This is my story.  Yours will look completely different.  But the common denominator is surrender and obedience. If you are willing to surrender your life to Jesus completely and receive him as your Savior and your Lord, you will discover what he will do with your yes.
